Ever wonder what those numbers on the
sidewall of your tire mean? They are called the "Uniform Tire
Quality Grading", and they provide details on the tire’s
capabilities.
The ratings are as follows:
TREADWEAR:
A comparative numerical rating code that indicates the wear rate of
the tire. A tire rated at 200 should last twice as long as a tire
rated at 100.
TRACTION:
This rating shows the tire’s ability to stop in a straight line on
wet roads. The "AA" rating is the best and "C"
is the lowest.
TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE:
This test rating measures how well the tire resists overheating
during sustained high-speed use. An ‘A’ rating is the best.
The uniform grading system is a very useful
consumer guide. However, other aspects of tire performance and value
should not be forgotten, such as: ride comfort, energy absorption,
road noise, toughness, warranty and the level of service provided by
the manufacturer and the seller.
